Microsoft 365 Copilot is a new feature that was recently announced by Microsoft.
Copilot is a virtual assistant that provides personalized guidance and support to users of Microsoft 365 applications. It uses machine learning and natural language processing to understand user queries and provide relevant information and assistance. It uses large language models (LLMs) and your data in the Microsoft Graph to help you with your work.
Copilot is seamlessly integrated into Microsoft 365 in two different ways. It operates alongside you, incorporated into the Microsoft 365 applications you regularly use, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, and more, to enhance creativity, productivity, and skillsets. Additionally, Microsoft introduced a brand new experience, Business Chat. Business Chat works across the entire Microsoft 365 suite, including your data – such as your calendar, emails, chats, documents, meetings, and contacts – to enable you to perform tasks that were not previously possible. By providing natural language prompts such as “Update my team on the new product strategy,” it generates a status update based on the morning’s meetings, emails, and chat threads.
Microsoft 365 Copilot can help you with a variety of tasks in the Microsoft 365 apps, e.g.:
- Copilot in Word offers a head start in the creative process and eliminates the need to start from scratch. Copilot generates a first draft that can be edited and refined, reducing the time and effort spent on writing, sourcing, and editing. Copilot’s suggestions may be useful or may require modification, but they will always advance your progress. As the author, you retain full control of your ideas, guiding Copilot to refine or shorten the content as necessary.
- Copilot in PowerPoint helps you produce visually appealing presentations by providing relevant content from a previous document.
- Copilot in Excel streamlines data analysis by rapidly generating professional-looking visualizations of trends.
- Copilot streamlines various aspects of work, such as summarizing lengthy email threads and drafting quick responses, allowing users to clear their inboxes in minutes instead of hours.
- In Teams, Copilot ensures that every meeting is productive by summarizing critical discussion points in real-time, identifying areas of consensus and disagreement, and providing actionable items.
- Copilot in Power Platform empowers individuals to automate repetitive tasks, create chatbots, and transform concepts into functional applications in just minutes.
You remain in full control with Copilot, determining what to retain, adjust, or eliminate. With Copilot’s assistance, you can enhance your creativity in Word, bolster your analytical skills in Excel, amplify your expression in PowerPoint, boost productivity in Outlook, and facilitate collaboration in Teams.
Microsoft 365 Copilot’s foundational skills are a game changer for productivity: It can already create, summarize, analyze, collaborate and automate using your specific business content and context. But it doesn’t stop there. Copilot knows how to command apps (e.g., “animate this slide”) and work across apps, translating a Word document into a PowerPoint presentation. And Copilot is designed to learn new skills. For example, with Viva Sales, Copilot can learn how to connect to CRM systems of record to pull customer data — like interaction and order histories — into communications. As Copilot learns about new domains and processes, it will be able to perform even more sophisticated tasks and queries.
Copilot represents a significant shift in the way people interact with AI and how AI assists people. Like any new approach, there may be a learning curve, but those who adopt this novel way of working will rapidly gain an advantage.
